What is Pilates ?

 

Movement within the human body involves the anatomy of the bones, which are linked together at the joint and are moved by the action of the muscles. Awareness of our bodies, and the way in which we manipulate it, grows as we continue to challenge our body through multiple patterns of movement that engages the bones, joints and muscles.  This is what Pilates aims to do.  Giving a heightened level of functional movement back to your body.
The Pilates Method trains all of the muscles of the body to gain strength in the manner they are designed to perform (function). Everyone’s body has some weakness inherent to them.  The Pilates Method will make those weaknesses obvious as you perform movement patterns.  In turn an individualized program will be designed to target those imbalances and weaknesses.


Most exercise programs will increase intensity, frequency and duration of activity over a period of time in order for you to progress.  Pilates is more concentrated on efficiency.  The workout never increases in time but rather increase in the amount you accomplish during that time with control and precision.  There are no quick jerky movements. No straining to the point of exhaustion.  The exercises stimulate the circulatory system, oxygenating the blood, aiding lymphatic drainage and releasing endorphins which are your “feel good” factor.  The immune system is given a boost to provide greater resistance to disease and illness.

Get the most out of Pilates and all the benefits it has to offer. This 5 - week session is designed to teach you how to fire the correct muscles, while using deep breathing and slow, controlled, non-impact movements to train, realign and balance the body. Pre-requisit for mat classes.

Take what you have learned from the intro class and step up the tempo and learn new exercises.

The "Reformer" is one of Pilates most popular pieces of equipment; it provides low impact, resistence-based workouts that are friendly on the joints.
